Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) or the “Centre of Education and Consciousness” Public Trust, established in 2000, is a civil society organization focused on addressing the profound education crisis of Pakistan through action and policy research, service-delivery and advocacy. ITA has been a strong education champion across Pakistan with field programs covering complex aspects of: Access, Learning, Quality, Evaluating Low-Cost Private Schools, Inclusion, Child Protection, Gender Justice and Education, Tolerance, Citizenship, Health and Hygiene Interventions, and Technical and Vocational Training Programs with government, communities and public and private school systems.
ASER Survey 2023 gains momentum
ASER Pakistan
The Provincial Training Workshop for AJ&K was held in Muzaffarabad at Khudadad Restaurant. The two-day training was organized between 2nd-3rd August, 2023 for the lead ASER partner, Hamza Development Foundation, for the survey in all 10 districts of AJ&K. The lead trainers for the exercise were Mr. Waqas Bajwa (Deputy Director Communication and Partnerships – ITA) and Mr. Zulfiqar Ali (Data Analyst – ITA Islamabad Office). After an introductory session, the participants were split into groups led by the ASER trainers/facilitators in order to cover the data collection guidelines, SOPs as well as practice sessions using role play. On Day 2, a session to gather participant reflections as well as to answer any outstanding queries was held. A session on district training sessions was also conducted by the CEO, Ulfat Bangash and Mr. Imtiaz, head and owner of Hamza Development Foundation.
The Punjab Provincial Training Workshop was held in Lahore at Shalimar Restaurant. A three-day session was organized from 8th August till 10th August, 2023 for ASER partners for the province of Punjab, which included: YDD, IHF, SKS, STEP, NCHD and FSO. The lead trainers for the sessions were Mr. Waqas Bajwa (Deputy Director Communication and Partnerships – ITA), Ms. Maham Afzal (Research Analyst – ASER), Ms. Meenal Javed (Research Analyst – ASER), Ms. Anisha Saleem (Data Analyst – ITA Lahore), Mr. Zulfiqar Ali (Data Analyst – ITA Islamabad), and Mr. Muhammad Shakeel Ahmed (Provincial Manager KP – ITA). After an introductory talk on the background of ASER 2023, ITA’s Child Safeguarding and Protection and Harassment policies and SOPs were briefly shared with the participants. The participants were then split into 6 groups, each group was led by an ASER team member/facilitator. During group work survey SOPs, guidelines, and survey booklet were shared with the participants, and practice sessions via role play were held. On Day 2, field practice was conducted in Bangali Village near Burki in Lahore district, where participants split up in groups and conducted the household survey including assessment of children’s learning levels. The filled survey booklets were later reviewed by the ASER team and feedback was shared. On Day 3, a general session was held to gather participant reflections and address any gaps or confusions with regards to the survey data collection.
The Baluchistan Provincial Training Workshop was held in Quetta at Azat Foundation’s office. A three-day session was organized from 22nd to 24th of August, 2023 for ASER partners for the province of Baluchistan, which included: Azat Foundation, EHED, CTE, G&GS, and NCHD. The lead trainers for the sessions were Mr. Waqas Bajwa (Deputy Director Communication and Partnerships – ITA), Mr. Syed Tanzeem (Consultant – ASER Baluchistan), Ms. Meenal Javed (Research Analyst – ASER), and Ms. Fatima Hafeez (Data Analyst – ITA Karachi).
On Day 1, a background session was held on ASER survey and its methodology. Later the participants were split into groups for further discussion on the Survey Booklet and practice, via role play and group exercises. On Day 2, field practice was conducted at a private school campus, where the training participants practiced assessing children’s learning using ASER tools. Later feedback was provided on basis of any gaps observed by ASER team members. On Day 3, a short session on Child Safeguarding and Protection and Harassment policies was held, followed by a session on survey planning. The training concluded with gathering of reflections from the participants and a short Q&A session to address any outstanding concerns.
The Gilgit Baltistan Provincial Training Workshop was held in Gilgit at Oasis Hotel. A two-day session was organized from 30th till 31st August of August, 2023 for the sole ASER partner in GB for the survey called Geo – Tag. The lead trainers for the session were Mr. Waqas Bajwa (Deputy Director Communication and Partnerships – ITA), Ms. Anisha Saleem (Data Analyst – ITA Lahore), and Mr. Zulfiqar Ali (Data Analyst – ITA Islamabad). On Day 1, an introductory session was held for ASER 2023 and survey methodology, followed by group work during which discussion on survey guidelines, filling of survey booklet, and group exercises were conducted. On Day 2, further practice sessions were held via role play, followed by a brief session on Child Safeguarding and Protection and Harassment policies followed by ITA and its affiliates. The training concluded with a session on reflections shared the participants as well as a brief Q&A to address any remaining gaps or concerns.
During August, significant progress was made by the vendor engaged for development of the ASER mobile data collection app. During the provincial training workshops for Punjab and GB the training participants were trained using an early version of the ASER mobile data collection app. A separate online session was also held on 7th September, 2023 for master trainers from partner organizations in KP on the use of ASER mobile data collection app. The ASER mobile data collection app is still undergoing testing and is in final stages of development. It is expected to be available for deployment by 20th September, 2023.
RECOVERY FOR FOUNDATIONAL LEARNING
Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi has been focused on improving the learning levels of children affected by floods through the use of Accelerated Learning methodologies, such as TaRL, as part of the ‘Recovery for Foundational Learning’ program.
As the program approaches its conclusion, we are currently analyzing the results and sharing the valuable insights we have gained. Here are some of the findings, achievements, and activities up until August 31st.
In August, our new and final session began; Cohort IV is now in progress. During this session, we've enrolled 3423 children in Cohort IV Batch I and 2488 in Batch II, across both districts.
Over the program's duration, we've reached a significant milestone by enrolling a total of 3187 children with disabilities — 2282 in Ghotki and 905 in Shikarpur.
We have successfully completed the enrollment of students within Intervention III - the "All Children Learning: Every Child Counts, Every House Matters" initiative (ages 6-16).
At Model Village 1 – Mehmood Panhwar, a total of 399 students have been enrolled, comprising 218 in-school students and 181 out-of-school children across 10 camps. Likewise, in Model Village 2 – Methalo Momal ji Mari, 243 students have been enrolled, with 124 in-school students and 119 out-of-school children through 6 camps.

Empowering Young Minds in Shikarpur and Ghotki with “Zor Se Kehna, NAHI!”
In our camps at Shikarpur and Ghotki, we’re helping kids feel stronger. Our child safety officers are talking about a powerful book called “Zor Se Kehna, NAHI!” written by Afreen Rubbani and published by Idara-e-Taleem o Agahi.
This book isn’t just a book. It’s like a guide that helps kids feel brave when they face tough things.
Pakistan Literacy Project (PLP)
In the month of August 2023, the Pakistan Literacy Project team continued its relentless efforts to promote literacy and education in partnership with government schools in Lahore and Bahawalpur. The team engaged in a variety of activities aimed at enriching the educational experience of students and strengthening the reading culture within the community.
Back to School: During the month of August, the Pakistan Literacy Project successfully distributed new storybooks to classroom corner libraries established in government partner schools in Lahore and Bahawalpur. The introduction of these new books generated excitement among students, who eagerly read the books in their library period as well as checked them out to read with their family members. The libraries have not only brought smiles and joy into the students’ daily routines but have also played a pivotal role in improving their reading habits.
14th August Celebrations: Our partner schools celebrated Pakistan Independence Day on the 14th of August with exuberant performances and engaging reading activities. Students had the opportunity to delve into books about the national heroes of Pakistan and learned about the importance of taking care of our country. This celebration instilled a sense of patriotism and love for learning among the students.
Interdistrict Visit: A significant highlight of the month was the visit of the Pakistan Literacy Project team from Lahore to Bahawalpur, where they had the opportunity to interact with partner schools in Bahawalpur. This cross-district visit proved to be highly beneficial as it facilitated the exchange of knowledge and best practices between the district teams. The experience was enriching, with the team gathering valuable insights that they later implemented to enhance the engagement and effectiveness of the libraries, turning them into vibrant learning centers for children.
Book Publishing Field Testing: The Pakistan Literacy Project is making strides in the development of new books, which are now in the finalization phase. Field testing for the new titles took place under the joint efforts of the Bahawalpur and Lahore teams. These stories were put to the test in both government and private schools. The comments and feedback gathered from students and teachers during the testing phase were diligently recorded and shared with the publishers. We anticipate that these new titles will soon be available to children, bringing them immense joy and happiness as they embark on new literary adventures.
PEF/PEIMA SCHOOLS
As part of the PEF/PEIMA project, a series of successful summer camp activities were conducted in August. Additionally, a training session focused on the ‘QAT Pattern’ was organized for all school teachers. The aim was to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the pattern and its consistent implementation within classrooms. With the commencement of the school opening after summer vacations, students returned to their regular classes brimming with renewed energy, fresh hopes, and newfound knowledge.
Young Omang (MHM)
Young Omang project team actively participated in a comprehensive three-day capacity-building workshop. This workshop, facilitated by the CDA in Murree, centered around the themes of safeguarding project beneficiaries and ensuring business continuity. The training was a dedicated effort to enhance the protection of both project recipients and organizational staff.
Celebrations
The 14th of August celebration was meticulously orchestrated at the ITA head office, involving active participation from districts and provincial teams through online link. The event comprised a diverse range of engaging and enlightening activities that fostered both knowledge and enjoyment.
On International Youth Day, a thought-provoking dialogue session was orchestrated, featuring young social activists. The focus of the session centered around the concept of green skills for the youth. During this discourse, each participant contributed insightful perspectives on how young individuals can adeptly showcase their green skills, thereby contributing to the creation of a safer and more sustainable environment
Pakistan Learning Festival (PLF
PLF’s Kitab Gari celebrated 14th August in full spirit with the kids from SOS Village, CDG Middle School, Child Protection & Welfare Bureau to name a few and Kids from many marginalized communities. The Learning Activities of the whole week was designed on Pakistani heroes, patriotism and the role of children in promoting climate change followed by Art and Craft activities.
We are delighted to announce our new publication, ‘Zor Se Kehna, Nahee!’ illustrated and authored by Afreen Rubbani. We took pride in publishing one of the first children’s books on child abuse and its awareness. The book sheds light on a critical issue of Child Protection, with amazing characters, ‘Zor Se Kehna Nahee!’ is set to make a lasting impact through a powerful call to action, urging us to create a safe environment for our children.
Zor se Kehna, Nahee’ Karachi Launch was held on 17th August 2023 in collaboration with the Karachi Arts Council, Islamabad launch was held on 22nd August 2023 in collaboration with the National Commission on the Rights of Child, and the Lahore launch was marked in collaboration with Children Library Complex. All three major cities’ launch ceremonies were attended by eminent guests working on Child Rights, different NGOs attended the event and appreciated the ITA’s efforts in opening up the dialogue on child protection through its publication.
Aawaz II
District Forum meetings were conducted in both districts during the month August 2023. 25 district forum members participated in district Toba Tek Singh same as in Okara.
Two days training of Resource Persons in both districts was conducted on AAC handbook, 24 RPs from Okara and 32 from Toba Tek Singh attended the training. The basic purpose of the training was to orientate AAC Resource Persons on handbook. The training highlighted effective strategies for engaging with the local community, understanding their needs, and tailoring AAC services accordingly. RPs were trained in active listening and communication skills to facilitate meaningful interactions.
During August 2023, 02 district level dialogues were conducted to commemorate the National Minority Day. The event’s impact extended beyond its duration, sparking ongoing conversations and collaborations. The insights gathered during the dialogue informed future initiatives and policies aimed at promoting the well-being of religious minorities in district Toba Tek Singh. By fostering understanding and unity, the district-level dialogue contributed to the overall goal of building an inclusive and equitable society.
166 Village Forum and AAC Resource Persons attended the one-day session on Early Warning and Early Response Mechanism from both districts. 94 participants participated from district Toba Tek Singh and 72 from district Okara.
16 Aawaz Aagahi Centres have been established and functional in district Toba Tek Singh and 10 AACs have been established in district Okara.
Monitoring visits from Program Manager and M&E were also done to ensure smooth and effective execution of project activities.
