Room to Read
Founded in 2000, Room to Read’s mission is to nurture foundational learning skills in children. They work on developing children’s literacy and life skills in a dignified and gender-equal way. The PLP team is utilizing the Room to Read’s approach of working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments around the world, and is engaging multiple partners through workshops, capacity building sessions, and project meetings.
Pakistan Literacy Project
Supported by Room to Read, the Pakistan Literacy Project team works in collaboration with Secondary Education Department, Punjab, to develop literacy skills and cultivate a culture of reading among the primary school children. Implemented as a technical assistance project, PLP enhances learning opportunities by establishing 34 primary school libraries and promoting children’s book publishing in Pakistan.
Objectives
- To develop literacy skills and habit of reading among primary school children.
- To equip beneficiaries with advanced skills to develop engaging, age appropriate picture book stories for children aged 4-8 through structured writing and story development techniques.
- To mitigate low literacy rates by introducing a sustainable Urdu Reading Instruction Pack for Grade 1 in partnership with government systems.
- To equip girls with essential life skills and to encourage them to overcome barriers like child labor and early marriage early using animated storytelling and localized educational resources.
- To build a connected and sustainable ecosystem for Pakistani children’s literature, ensuring young readers have access to quality and culturally relevant books.
